After a heartbreaking loss to the University of Connecticut in the 1998-1999 national championship game, the Duke University Blue Devils look to begin the new century with a return to the title game.
This year's Devils will have their work cut out for them. Gone are most of the players who took them to the Final Four last season. Trajan Langdon, Elton Brand, William Avery, and Corey Maggette have all made the switch the NBA, while Chris Burgess elected to transfer to Utah. Assistant Coach Quinn Snyder accepted the head coaching position at the University of Missouri.
In order to make for the loss of so many players, Coach Mike Krzyzewski has brought in what may be one of the top recruiting classes in NCAA history. Center Casey Sanders, forward Carlos Boozer, and point guard Jason Williams are among the top 20 recruits in the nation. Mike Dunleavy, Jr., and Nick Horvath, also highly-regarded young players, round out Duke's class of 2003.
Providing veteran leadership will be seniors Chris Carrawell and Nate James and junior Shane Battier. Can the young, new-look Blue Devils match the incredible success of the 1998-1999 squad?
